In 1893, Scandivanian scientist Dr Niels Ryberg Finsen discovered he could use red light to treat smallpox. Finsen’s interest in light therapy came about when he developed a severe metabolic disorder called Niemann Pick’s disease and found that sunbathing had helped his symptoms.
He continued to explore the healing effects of phototherapy, proving that light therapy could be used to cure smallpox, lupus vulgaris, and various other diseases.
In 1903, Dr Finsen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine when the Nobel prize committee recognised “his contribution to the treatment of diseases, especially lupus vulgaris, with concentrated light radiation, whereby he has opened a new avenue for medical science.”
Before his death, Dr Finsen hoped that a day would come when light therapy and its various healing benefits would be accessible to everybody.
He wrote, “I believe implicitly that in the future use will be made of this new therapeutic agent [Light], and the proof experiment once made, it will be easy to carry it out practically under the form of Light Baths.”
Fast forward to today, red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation (PBM), is increasingly being used to treat many conditions that require healing stimulation, relief of pain and inflammation, and restoration of function.
In this article, we look at the science behind red light therapy and how it can benefit your body at a cellular level.
Red light therapy involves exposing your body to a lamp, device, or laser with a red light. When red and near-infrared light are delivered at the right wavelength, intensity and duration, the mitochondria of your body’s cells react by producing more energy.
With more energy, our body’s cells can do their work more efficiently, such as repairing skin, boosting new cell growth, reducing inflammation and enhancing skin rejuvenation.
Red light therapy is a non-invasive, painless treatment that does not use heat.
So, does red light therapy really work? Does research support it?
The good news is that red light therapy has been studied in over 500 human trials and 4,000 lab studies.
Here are a few ways red light therapy can benefit you.
Taking in light is crucial for skin health and overall health and wellness.
According to a study from The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, red light therapy has been shown to augment tissue repair, promote regeneration and skin rejuvenation, and boost the production of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin.
Numerous studies have also reported that red light therapy can improve the skin’s texture and complexion, treat issues such as acne and reduce signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and age spots.
In fact, celebrities are now flocking to red light therapy for its natural, non-invasive, anti-ageing benefits. Kourtney Kardashian, Kelly Rowland, Emma Stone, and Chrissy Teigen are just a few celebrities who swear by the magic of red and blue light facial therapy.
Red light therapy is hugely popular among athletes and trainers for boosting performance and speeding up recovery after injury. The quick recovery rate is due to increased energy production, better blood circulation, and faster cell regeneration.
A study published in the journal Laser Therapy followed a group of university athletes and measured the time it took them to return to play following a sports injury. The study found that those who used red light therapy to help with their injuries could return to play much faster than those who didn’t.
If you have been struggling with knee pain, you will be relieved to know that various studies point to the efficacy of red light therapy in reducing pain and improving the quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
In one study by Dr. Hamblin of Harvard Medical School, red light therapy was found to effectively reduce inflammation in the brain, abdominal fat, wounds, lungs, and spinal cord. When cells absorb red and near-infrared light, ATP (an energy-carrying molecule found in cells), oxygen, and protein production increases, creating anti-inflammatory agents and speeding up healing.
Red light therapy has been clinically shown to increase your natural melatonin output, which helps you get better sleep.
Red light therapy has also shown promise as a treatment for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and traumatic brain injury.
A 2019 study showed that brain stimulation with red light helped improve anxiety symptoms in individuals with generalised anxiety disorder. The participants were also able to sleep better after treatment.
A study in Behavioral and Brain Functions also found that red light therapy may help improve depression as soon as two weeks after a single treatment.
If thinning hair has been worrying you, here’s a ray of hope. Studies show that people who received red light therapy have improved hair density.
Red light therapy can also help relieve a variety of oral problems. It has been shown to be effective in reducing pain associated with TMD, inflammation, and ulcers.
